when should you first bathe a newborn

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends delaying the first bath for at least 24 hours after birth, in order to allow the baby to receive the benefits of the vernix caseosa. Vernix caseosa is a white, creamy substance that covers the skin of a newborn and provides protection and hydration. Delaying the first bath can also help to regulate the baby's body temperature and promote breastfeeding.

However, if there are medical reasons that require an immediate bath, such as meconium (the baby's first stool) on the skin or a high risk of infection, then the bath should be given as soon as possible.

It is important to consult with your healthcare provider or midwife about the best time to give your newborn their first bath, as well as how to properly bathe and care for your baby's delicate skin.
