An elephant's body is covered in a thick, wrinkled skin that is usually gray in color. The skin is composed of several layers, including an outer layer of coarse, bristly hairs and an inner layer of smooth, sensitive skin. Elephants use their skin to regulate their body temperature, protect themselves from the sun and insects, and communicate with other elephants through touch and scent. In some areas, elephants are also known to roll in mud to protect their skin from the sun and parasites.
